What to Look Out For When Buying a French Bulldog From A Breeder

Let me guess, you finally had the discussion amongst your family and you all agree on getting your dream dog, a french bulldo! I believe frenchies are truly the best family dog you can get, especially if you live in an urban environment. With the french bulldog breed gaining popularity, it is more important than ever to investigate your breeder before purchasing your frenchie. As a breeder of french bulldogs in Massachusetts, I will detail what to look for in a breeder below!

Google Reviews!

If you’re anything like me, you use google every day. For example, if I am in a new city and I want to find good restaurants, I always search for restaurants near me on google. Once the list loads, I go straight to the reviews. When researching your breeder make sure you do the same, check there reviews! In the pet industry, reviews are either 5 stars or no stars! Take a special look at the 0 star ratings and see why the received that review. Use your best judgement on whether to believe the review however! Sometimes breeders don’t sell to certain people based on their research and that may cause an angry non client!

Social Media

Almost everyone is on social media these days! Find your french bulldog breeder on Facebook and Isntagram and see what they post. See if the adult dogs look like they live a happy life, and not just stuck in a cage all day. Check to see if they post photos of puppies that went to there forever homes. Are they engaging with their previous customers? Understand that age does play a factor here though. People who have been breeding dogs for decades may be the best in the industry but are old-school and don’t use social media. Just because they aren’t up to date with the times doesn’t mean they aren’t good breeders!

Contract

Ask your french bulldog breeder if they have a contract you can view prior to purchasing your frenchie. A breeder who has a contract drafted up that details the conditions of your purchasing agreement is a MUST! Check for things like the health guarantee, the warranty length etc.! Actually take the time to read it. Often time’s breeders will have a condition that requires you to bring them to a vet for a checkup 3 to 5 days after your purchase or all warrants are voided. It is important to be aware of small things like that before purchasing your frenchie from a breeder.

What does your frenchie puppy come with when taken home?

In my opinion, the five bullets points listed below are the most important to look out for when purchasing a french bulldog puppy.

  • AKC Registration
  • Microchipped
  • DHPP Vaccines
  • Health Sign Off
  • Dewormed

AKC Registration

The only way to guarantee your new frenchie is actually a french bulldog is to have the AKC registration. AKC stands for the American Kennel Club. The AKC is a “registry of purebred dog pedigrees in the United States”. In order for a french bulldog puppy to be registered with the AKC, both its parents need to be AKC registered, which proves that they are purebred dogs.

Microchipped

This isn’t necessarily a MUST, but it is nice to see. When a dog is microchipped, an integrated circuit is placed on the skin that is approximately the size of a rice pebble. The chip uses passive radio frequency identification technology. Think of it as a social security number for a dog! If your french bulldog ever gets lost and is brought to the pound, they would be able to read the microchip and bring your puppy back home to you.

DHPP Vaccines

Frenchies typically go home when they are at least 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, they are old enough to get their first shot of the DHPP Vaccine. The DHPP vaccine prevents distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and two types of adenovirus (hepatitis). It is a series of three shots which are typically given at 8, 12 and 16 weeks. It is important to not bring you frenchie puppy to public places until they are fully vaccinated.

It is also important to ensure your puppy has been dewormed at least three times. If your french bulldog puppy has the runs after you take he/she home, don’t be alarmed. Puppies may need to be dewormed multiple times throughout the first year as it takes a while for them to build up a resistance to certain bacteria’s.

Health Sign Off

Absolutely a MUST! If you’re purchasing a french bulldog from a breeder and that puppy hasn’t seen a vet yet, walk away! Make sure your french bulldog breeder brings all of their puppies to their local vet for a health sign off. At the animal hospital, the vet will check the frenchies heart, legs, back, etc. to make sure the puppy is healthy before going to there forever home.
